How Radon Mitigation Works

Radon mitigation sounds technical, but the concept is simple: instead of letting your home pull radon up from the soil, a system pulls it out before it enters. The proven method is called active sub-slab depressurization (ASD).

The components

  • Suction point – a hole cored through the slab into the gravel or soil below
  • Vent pipe – sealed PVC piping that runs from the suction point up and out above the roofline
  • Radon fan – an in-line fan that creates continuous suction beneath the foundation
  • Manometer – a simple gauge that shows the system is pulling suction at a glance
  • Sealing – cracks, the sump pit, and openings are sealed to make the system efficient

How it reduces radon

The fan creates a slight vacuum under the slab that's stronger than the vacuum your home creates. Radon takes the path of least resistance – up the pipe and out above the roof – instead of into your living space. A well-designed system reduces radon by up to ~99%.
